About Doulas
“We have many names and none. We are that woman in the village who always knows when your time is close. We appear with food, love, warm water and strong arms. We shepherd the children, call the midwife and hold the mother as she and her baby work together towards birth.”
— Maddie McMahon (2015). Why Doulas Matter. Pinter & Martin.
-
Doulas provide practical and emotional support for birthing parents and their families.
The role is non-medical and doulas respond to each family’s needs to provide individualised care. The doula role is one of listening, encouraging self-advocacy and providing evidence-based information as well as providing hands-on support in labour and postnatally.
-
Doulas support all births.
Whether you decide to have your birth in hospital or at home, a caesarean or a water birth, doulas are here to support you and empower your voice in the decision-making process.
If a caesarean is planned, doulas can talk through parents’ feelings and wishes for the environment and support comfort beforehand and in recovery.
“Doulas do not prescribe any set breathing pattern or labor regimen. They create an emotional ‘holding’ environment for the mother, encouraging her to allow her own body to tell her what may be best at various times during labor.”
— Marshall H. Klaus, John H. Kennell, Phyllis H. Klaus (2012). The Doula Book. Lifelong Books.

“By her presence, manner, and comforting touch, the doula creates calmness and the essence of relaxation.”
